PM Orders Speed Increase Pensions

PHNOM PENH: The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, has ordered the Minister of Economy to speed up the increase of pensions for low-paid civil servants and veterans to a level similar to that of new retirees, especially those with salaries less than 1 million riel when they have already retired.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Chom Chao flyover and subway on Thursday, 31 March, 2022, PM stated that the pension for who are retirees is less than the salary of civil servants who just retired, which the PM urged to solve this, to ensure equality between the old and the new.

PM said "Now I would like to issue an order to speed up to increase to those with low pensions to a little higher, speed up only two or three years to achieve that goal! […] Because to the previous retirees also lacked equality for them, the later retirees all have a salary of more than one million, so when they retire, the remaining 800,000 riel will be the same before the retirement, and the retirement time is only 300,000 riel. ”

The Premier continued that for the past two years, the government has not increased the salaries of civil servants due to the need to fight Covid-19. However, PM stated that should pay more attention to retirees.

The Premier issued an order to the Minister of Economy to do this work and recommended that there is no need to adjust the national budget for these people, as this number is not too much, because we increase the pension to who old retirees which the base salary of 500,000 riel that have to increase from 20 to 30 percent for example.
